7-day famous Jhiri Mela inaugurated

Jammu, November 19 - Deputy Chief Minister Jammu & Kashmir, inaugurated the 7-day Jhiri Mela at Shama Chak, Akhnoor Jammu.

Jhiri Mela is held every year in memory of Baba Jitto and his daughter Bua Kodi. The Mela is attended by nearly 5 to 6 lakh devotees from Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and other parts of northern India.

Paying rich tribute to Baba Jitto, Deputy Chief Minister , Mr. Tara Chand described him as a revolutionary farmer who fought against the feudal system of exploitation and for the cause of marginalized farmers.

Highlighting various projects which have been undertaken to upgrade infrastructure at the famous pilgrim destination of the region, the Deputy Chief Minister said over sixty lakh rupees have been spent on development works around shrine area. He said that work on the Sarai building for the comfortable stay of pilgrims is apace and expected to be completed by coming march.

He said Rs. 4.63 crore double-laining project of Jhiri-Mishriwala road has been sanctioned, which was his commitment to the people of the area.

Responding to the demands put forth by the local representatives, Deputy Chief Minister assured that all genuine issues would be taken up at the right quarters. He said that keeping in view the increasing influx of devotes the demand for an additional Sarai or extension of the present Sarai would be looked into seriously.
