People Celebrating Holi - The festival of Colours

This festival falls on the Phalgun Purnima (or Pooranmashi, Full Moon). Throughout the entire day on Holi people throw coloured powder and water at each other.

Some believe that playful throwing of the coloured powders has a medicinal significance (as traditionally the colours are made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Āyurveda). A special drink (thandai) is also prepared during the festival, sometimes containing bhang.
