From Jammu Tawi to the Kashmir Valley aboard one of India's most remarkable rail journeys. For generations, travelling to Kashmir has been as much about the journey as the destination. The journey is made possible by the completion of the a 272-kilometre railway project incorporating 36 tunnels and 943 bridges. The project has created an all-weather rail connection between the Kashmir Valley and the wider Indian railway network.
The Route: From Jammu to Srinagar
The current Vande Bharat service connects Jammu Tawi with Srinagar, with services also connecting important stations including Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and Banihal. The journey between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar covers approximately 266 kilometres and takes around five hours on the scheduled service.
For a traveller arriving at Jammu Tawi from another part of India, the journey can now continue by rail without changing trains at Katra.
As the train leaves Jammu, the landscape gradually changes. The relatively open terrain gives way to hills, valleys and increasingly rugged Himalayan country. From the foothills, the railway enters the challenging mountain terrain that makes this railway route so extraordinary.
One of the important stops on the journey is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, the base town for pilgrims travelling to the revered shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi.
Beyond Katra lies Reasi, where the railway enters some of the most spectacular and technically demanding sections of the route.
For travellers, this is where the character of the journey changes dramatically. The railway is no longer simply a means of transportation, it becomes a window into the Himalayan landscape and the extraordinary engineering required to cross it.
The Chenab Rail Bridge: An Engineering Wonder
Perhaps the most unforgettable moment of the journey is crossing the Chenab Rail Bridge.
Rising approximately 359 metres above the Chenab River, it is the world's highest railway arch bridge. The 1,315-metre-long steel structure has been designed to withstand the demanding seismic and wind conditions of the Himalayan region.
Seen from the train, the bridge offers a remarkable perspective of the surrounding mountains and the Chenab gorge.
For visitors to Jammu & Kashmir, the bridge has itself become an attraction. It represents not only a remarkable feat of railway engineering but also the transformation of a once extremely difficult mountain corridor into a modern railway route.
The experience of travelling across the bridge is likely to remain one of the highlights of any Vande Bharat journey to Kashmir.
The Anji Khad Bridge
Another spectacular structure is the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. The bridge rises dramatically above the Anji River valley and forms another important link in the railway through the mountains. Together, the Chenab and Anji bridges demonstrate the scale of engineering required to construct a railway through the rugged Pir Panjal landscape.
The journey therefore offers something rarely found on a conventional train trip: the opportunity to experience major engineering landmarks as part of the landscape itself.
Through the Tunnels of the Himalayas
The railway passes through an extraordinary network of tunnels carved through the Himalayan mountains. The USBRL includes 36 tunnels extending for about 119 kilometres, reflecting the enormous engineering challenge involved in creating a railway across this terrain.
For passengers, the repeated transition from daylight into tunnels and back into spectacular mountain scenery adds another dimension to the journey.
It is a fascinating reminder that much of the railway has been built not around the mountains, but through them.
Entering the Kashmir Valley
After crossing the rugged mountain country and passing through the Pir Panjal region, the landscape begins to open up. The dramatic cliffs and narrow valleys gradually give way to the wider, greener landscapes of Kashmir.
Depending on the season, passengers may see snow-covered mountains, green meadows, forests, orchards, rivers and cultivated fields.
